| MATCHPLAY
In Golf, match play is a scoring system. A player or his team earns points for every hole in which they outplayed their opponents. However, in stroke play the total number of strokes made by a player is counted
The unit of scoring is the stroke in a stroke play, but in match play hole is the scoring unit. The player with the lowest score for a particular hole gets one point. If the golfers get equal points then the hole is halved.
Match play scores of a specific game are kept on record. In the beginning of the match, the scorecard shows “all square”. As the play progresses the score is recorded. For example if player A gets 3 holes and if player B has got only one hole, then Player A is said to be leading, “2-up”.
The final score of any match can be summed up in any one of two ways mainly
- after completing all the 18 holes, it can be recorded that winner is one who is up by so many holes than the other,
- If the player wins one or two holes more than the number of holes left to play, then he can be declared a winner. In this case, the match need not be finished.
Nowadays only, a few tournaments use match play.
